Amendments to the Migration Act 1958 (Cth) that will come into effect on 1 July 2024 will see increased penalties for breaches of sponsor obligations and work-related offences and new offences to deter the exploitation of non-citizens that will include bars on employment and a public register of prohibited employers.

485 visas extension applications from 1 July 2023; Student visa work increase for all; NZ citizens to have “backdated” PR

The change to allow subsequent 485 visas for those in the Post-Study Work stream to apply for a further two-year visa from 1 July 2023 if they studied a select qualification was registered this week. The same instrument amends student visa conditions to increase work caps from 40 to 48 hours per fortnight and will apply to all student visa holders when it comes into effect. NZ citizens will be considered to be Australian permanent residents from as early as 1 July 2022.

Student visa work rights to increase from 40 to 48 hours per fortnight; 485 visas to be longer for select qualifications

The Minister for Home Affairs announced two measures to assist with immediate skill shortages including allowing student visa holders to work for 48 hours per fortnight, up from 40 hours from 1 July 2023 and some 485 visas under the Post-Study stream will have their visas granted for 2 additional years.
