PC report: abolish business skills visas, occupation lists, and some skill assessments; new aged and disability care visa, longer temporary visas and pathways to PR

Late last week the Productivity Commission provided its 5-year outlook and recommendations on how to boost Australia’s productivity. The review suggests abolishing business skills visas, removing occupation lists but increasing minimum income thresholds, creating a new visa for the aged and disability sector and more pathways to PR, and removing some skill assessments.

A creature of COVID, the Priority Migration Skilled Occupation List (PMSOL) was abolished last week and replaced with more back-to-business processing priorities except for healthcare and teaching occupations which now take the highest priority.

186 visas: Age cap lifts for legacy 457 visa holders from 1 July 2022; further 482 visa applications in the Short-term stream

The age cap for a 186 visa under the Temporary Residence Transition stream will not apply to some current or former 457 visa holders who were in Australia for at least 12 months during the pandemic from 1 July 2022. Also from this date, 482 visa holders in the Short-term who held this visa and were in Australia during the pandemic will be allowed to validly lodge a further application in Australia.

2022-23 Budget: More skilled migrants, less business skills, partner visas uncapped

The Federal Budget handed down last night reinstated the pre-eminence of skilled migration, boosting permanent migration numbers to pre-pandemic levels. Despite the number of places remaining at 160,000, partner visas will no longer be subject to a ceiling.
