An immediate crackdown on the ability for international students to be enrolled in more than one course of study occurred over the weekend, along with planned higher financial thresholds and more scrutiny of high-risk student visa applications. Health workforce certificates for GPs will be scrapped from 16 September 2023.

485 visas extension applications from 1 July 2023; Student visa work increase for all; NZ citizens to have “backdated” PR

The change to allow subsequent 485 visas for those in the Post-Study Work stream to apply for a further two-year visa from 1 July 2023 if they studied a select qualification was registered this week. The same instrument amends student visa conditions to increase work caps from 40 to 48 hours per fortnight and will apply to all student visa holders when it comes into effect. NZ citizens will be considered to be Australian permanent residents from as early as 1 July 2022.
